The Crocodile Sanctuary at La Manzanilla

On one of the days, while visiting
with my parents, we all went to the large crocodile sanctuary. Narrow board walks and bridges led us around
and through the large 264-hectare crocodile sanctuary that apparently has a
population of 400-500 crocodiles of various sizes. There was also a museum where we talked to
one of the workers and were told that the waters of the sanctuary itself
support the crocodile population. The
crocodiles eat shrimp, crabs, and fish, and we witnessed first hand, a
bird. The majority of the crocodiles
that we saw were at the beginning and end areas of the walk, and we moved
slowly through these areas as we stopped to look at all of the crocodiles. Falcon really liked seeing them, and he took it
upon himself to point them out to people who where coming behind us. He would point and say, “crocodile,
crocodile” to the different groups of people.
It was quite cute. At the end of
the walk we came to an area where they had young crocodiles in caged areas to
protect them, as well as to allow them to be viewed by visitors. We saw the very small crocodiles all the way
up to the very big giant ones. We also
saw two large male iguanas sunning themselves and displaying their colours on a
sunny branch. Once we were out of the
sanctuary and looking in through the fence near the entrance my Mom heard a
noise and looked over to see a large crocodile with parts of a large bird
sticking out the sides of its mouth. She
called us over and we got there just in time to see the crocodile open its
mouth, reposition the large bird that was now fully motionless and seemingly
swallow it whole.
Crazy! Hold on to Falcon. I think Crocodiles are one of the most dangerous creatures on earth. Probably because they just lay there in their camouflaged environment and can attack so quick you can't see it coming.
