A Day of Beautiful Hikes

August 1, 2021

On this day we were out on the lake early in the morning, and we had brought along our shoes specifically so that we could hike up a gorge.

We had spotted this spot on a previous day and decided that it would be neat to hike up between the massive vertical rock faces to see what was around the corner. We tied Kiki off to shore and made our way up.

The rocky path of jumbled rocks that had fallen down over time was surprisingly stable and it had clearly been settling under snow, ice, and water for many years.

Climbing steeply up our rocky staircase we gained elevation quickly and soon the steep walls of the cliffs narrowed in around us.

Until we got higher and higher none of the rocks were loose under foot.

We came to a Y in the gorge. The right-hand path dead-ended a ways ahead as the rocks closed in, but the branch to the left carried on.

We headed up the left-hand branch and passed a massive boulder sitting in the middle of the gorge. It was amazing to think of this boulder coming to a stop in this location. We continued on upwards, but did not go very much further. The rocky sides closed in further and we were very aware that if a rock were to choose to fall at the wrong time, we would have little chance of dodging it.

We heard the echo of loose rocks tumbling in the distance and we decided to turn around.

On the way back down we climbed up on top of the isolated massive boulder. What a spot!

Further along the lake we stopped again and hiked up to a waterfall with a large ice pack still holding strong on the shady side of the mountain.

It was a beautiful day of hiking.
