Hoping for Good Weather

June 23rd and 24th (Tuesday and Wednesday)

Ah, it is nice to sleep in and relax.  Getting up at 05:45 and working for ten or more hours every day gets tiring.  It was nice to be able to turn off the alarm and sleep in this morning.  Once we were up, however, we found that even though we were still somewhat tired, we were also motivated and we started doing various little projects on the boat.  We cleaned the inside, scrubbed our floor, wiped down the inside of the enclosure material and scrubbed our cockpit.  It was nice to get everything clean again.  We also went into our engine room and topped up our battery levels with distilled water and did some cleaning in there.  
We have been keeping an eye on the weather forecast and we are hoping to head out cruising on Saturday (27th).  So far it looks like it will be nice, and we are looking forward to going out to the outer coast and doing some exploring.  We wanted to be all ready for this, so in the breaks between rain showers we got everything shipshape outside, we got our outboard up onto its mount on the back and prepared Kiki to be towed.  We also emptied our freezer and gave it a full defrost before repacking it with the food that we wanted to take with us.  We are now ready to go!!
As you all will be aware, we have now passed the longest day of the year.  From here on in the days will be getting shorter.  We have now been on the Central Coast for a full year, as it is one year ago that we had just arrived at Calvert Island.  We have also now been in Ocean Falls for both winter solstice and summer solstice, and the difference is quite dramatic.  In December we had 7 hours and 41 minutes of daylight and the sunshine never came up over the mountains and landed on Ocean Falls.  Now, we have 16 hours and 46 minutes of daylight and the sun is up over the mountains at around 08:00.  That is an extra 9 hours and 5 minutes of daylight.  Although we have been having a lot of rain so far this “summer”, if we can call it that, we are still hopeful that the weather will improve.  On Monday (22nd) we had a high temperature of 13 degrees and set a record for that day for the most rainfall of 71.5 millimetres.  It has been mainly wet and cold.

A Fantastic Birthday

September 9th (Wednesday) Our first day off after our 8-day shift, and it was also my birthday.  I enjoyed what felt like a nice long sleep-in as compared to getting up at 05:45 for work, and then Jason gave me my birthday presents and made me a delicious brunch of blueberry pancakes, bacon, and sausages.  Then we were off to the lake.  It was a beautiful, sunny day and glassy calm as we planed our way along the lake.  We went down to the south end to check it out and explore, as we had never been down to that end before.   As the sun got hotter we wanted to enjoy it, and to go swimming, so we headed to our perfect picnic and swimming area of Triple Falls.  There we enjoyed a fantastic afternoon of relaxing and swimming.  The water felt quite a bit cooler than it had the last time that we were there, so our refreshing swims were brief. Finally Back to the Blog

September 26,  2024 It has been way too long since I have written an update for the blog.   Sorry about that.   Falcon is almost 22 months old, and computer work is a challenging thing to get done with him always wanting to be involved in what I am doing, so needless to say, blog writing has taken a back burner.     Many of you will already know much of what we have been up to over the past year and a bit, but some of you may not, and I thought that either way I would write up some quick summary notes and post some pictures.  Most of the pictures are of Falcon, as he is the love of our lives.    Lucky for us, given that we live in Ocean Falls where it rains a lot, Falcon enjoys being out in the rain.       And he really enjoys climbing into and onto things, perhaps just to see if he can fit.  And, because of his love of climbing, we built him a climbing wall, on which he has gotten quite proficient. Work Around the Yard

March 28th and 29th (Sunday and Monday) On our way back in from pulling our traps, Jason and I grabbed our electric pressure washer from the boat, which we have as a spare high-pressure pump for our water maker, and Jason decided to clean up our 27 steps.   It had clearly been a long time since anyone had paid any attention to them and they were incredibly moss covered.   Unfortunately, the high-pressure pump, which works perfect for our water maker, turned out to be quite lacking in psi for moss removal.   With persistence, however, Jason got the steps looking like new.   I pulled out the chop saw, air compressor, and nail gun from downstairs and got to work on building some birdhouses.    I wanted to build some birdhouses for the swallows this year, and I had done quite a bit of research into the types of houses that best suited the different types of birds.   It turned out that the wider boards that we get off of the pallets fo...
