Mowi Staff Picnic
June 4th (Thursday)
In the morning, after a bit of sewing, we got ready for Ken to pick us up around 11:00. It was the day for the Mowi staff fishing trip on the lake. Although it was socked in and raining in the morning, as we started to get ready the clouds began to lift and we were hopeful for a nice day.
Ken picked us up and we went up to the lake with him and Shelly where we met up with the crew.
There were three boats in the lake ready for our use, one was the Mowi lake boat which is used for adjusting the intake pipes on the lake, the second was the Mowi sea boat which had been brought up for the day, and the third was a nice little lake boat of Ken’s. Jason and I rode with Ken and Shelly, and as we planed out across the water we were happy to be under the cover of their small enclosure as another shower came overhead.
It was lovely to be out on the lake again. The last time that we were out it was March and everything was still covered in snow and ice. Now the shoreline was lush and green and the majestic shear rock cliffs were mostly snow free. From the last few days of heavy rainfall dozens of stunning sheer drop waterfalls plummeted down the cliffs and into the lake. It was beautiful.
We met up once again with the other boats at the area of Triple Falls where we had had our picnic with the wharfinger Ken back in March. We had sat in the sun on the beach, but there was still at least a foot of snow on the ground. Now, of course, all of the snow was gone and we unloaded all of our gear and set up a covered tent in case it rained.
It was agreed that we would meet back there for a late lunch and we all headed out again to do some fishing. We had fun fishing with Ken and Shelly, and we checked out a few different areas. We pulled in close to shore by a creek that ran out and did some casting into the flooded stump patches. Fish were following our hooks and then veering off right before the boat so we knew that they were there and interested, and before lunch we had caught about six between the four of us. The fish were a nice size and beautiful, fully spotted and very pretty.
It had been a long time since we had done any good trout fishing, and it was fun. They put up a good fight jumping out of the water at the surface and also diving down deep, it was just like fighting little salmon, and with light trout fishing tackle it was just as much fun.
Back at the beach at Triple Falls we got a fire going. Ken and Shelly had brought some dry firewood and then we dried wet driftwood to keep the fire going. We roasted sausages and had a hot dog roast. It was lovely, a perfect lunch for a nice day at the lake.
After lunch we were eager to get out fishing again, and as the afternoon wore on we worked our way back trying several fishing spots along the way. We were the last of the three boats to get back to the dock, and Ken and Shelly dropped us off at the marina saying that they would pick us up in an hour.
After a hot shower we headed up to meet them and went over to their place for a lovely dinner. Shelly had made up a feast of crab macaroni and cheese, chicken souvlaki, ribs, a kale salad, and deep-fried prawns. It was a delicious dinner, and to finish it all off we had ice cream and a scrumptious rhubarb crumble that Dorothy had made.
Jason and I left at around 21:30 and had a lovely evening walk home smelling the many wild flowers that were in bloom along the way. It was a beautiful evening!
Trout, one of my favourites! Sounds like a wonderful day.
