Chimichangas and an Evening Beach Walk

March 7, 2025

One afternoon we checked the weather and spontaneously decided that it would be a good evening to go into La Manzanilla for dinner.  We wanted to go to Mateo’s restaurant for Chimichangas.  Mateo is the person who my Mom and Dad rented their air bnb from in January when they visited with us here, and he had offered at the time to be our contact person and location for getting one of our propane tanks refilled.

One day, about two weeks prior, we had taken our empty tank to him.  The propane tank truck drives around the area most days playing music, like an ice cream truck does, to alert potential customers that it is coming.  One can either call ahead and say that they have an empty tank, or one can flag the truck down when they hear the song.  Mateo had called in advance for us and we waited at his restaurant for the truck to arrive.  We prepaid and the truck took our tank. The next day our tank was returned full to Mateo’s restaurant and we picked it up the following morning.  While we were there we tried one of the items on Mateo’s menu that he had recommended.  It was delicious and really made us want to try his Chimichangas.

When we left the boat and headed into town for an early dinner we messaged him to ask if Chimichangas were on the dinner menu, as we only knew for sure that they were on the lunch menu.   Unfortunately, when we arrived in town and I checked my phone, Mateo had replied with some tragic news.  His restaurant had burnt to the ground several days before.

Unfortunately, with the restaurant that we chose instead the food was disappointing.  Ironically the sign out front claimed "the universes best tacos", but they were the worst that we have had in Mexico.
After our early dinner we went for a lovely evening beach walk.  The beach was busy with local Mexican families and Falcon stopped to say hi to many people. One little girl who was probably about four years old had a small cup of ice cream and came up to Falcon wanting to share a spoonful with him.  She gave him a bite and walked away; Falcon said thank you in Spanish and we carried on.  Then she ran up to him again with a second spoonful.  It was incredibly sweet.
Further along the beach there was a lady with a small rooster that was sitting on a chair beside her.  We asked her if her bird was friendly and she said yes and signalled us over.  She let Falcon pet and then hold the rooster.
The evening was beautiful and we had some wonderful interactions.  We headed home in our tender just after sunset and were home before dark.  After dark we all swam off of the boat and enjoyed the beautiful bioluminescence, then it was shower time and into bed for Falcon.  It was a lovely afternoon and evening.

  1. Sounds like paradise! It is amazing how young children can pick up a 2nd language.
The picture of Falcon on his dads shoulders tells it all. Falcon has an expression on his face that shows pure pleasure, enjoyment and love.
I hope the restaurant will re-open shortly because it sounds like they are great people.
