Learning to Surf
January 25, 2025
In mid January we contacted the surf shop in
Barra de Navidad and found out that they had a used 9-foot long-board for
sale. The owner ended up meeting us in
La Manzanilla, and we acquired a long board.
Since then we have been regular surfers.
All three of us have been enjoying learning to surf and we are now all
able to stand up and ride a wave.
After
seeing us starting to surf Falcon was eager to try. It started with us holding his hand and him
standing on the board while it was floating in the calm water, then he quickly
progressed to standing without our help.
He then started lying down on it and standing up on his own, so we tried
giving him a little push while he was lying down and he quickly hopped up to
standing. Now we can push the board just
ahead of a little wave. Falcon paddles with his hands that barely reach off the
board, then he will hop up and ride the wave.
Most of the time he makes it look easy, although he is still figuring
out consistent good foot placement.Jason
also takes Falcon out riding on the surfboard as a boogie board, and Falcon
started by sitting on the front of the board, but now that he is standing up on
his own, he lays on his stomach like Jason, “paddle, paddle, paddle” he says,
and then when they catch the wave he hops up and stands on the front. It is amazing
to see what good balance he has and how quickly it improves. It is interesting though to think about how
used to standing and walking on moving surfaces Falcon is. Ever since we crossed out of the Sea of Cortez
our boat has actually sat still at anchor very little.
Most of the time we are rocking around in the swells and we constantly
have to compensate for this somewhat unpredictable movement. It is not hard, but it is interesting to
think about Falcon already being used to that movement under his feet before
ever stepping onto a surfboard.
Surfing looks like so much fun. Falcon is proving to be a natural!
ReplyDeleteWow! way to go Falcon, I can see him in the surfing competition and taking the prize.
