An Evening Walk Along the Beach

January 3, 2025
The first time that Falcon and I slept over at my parents' air bnb we ate an early dinner and then went out for a sunset beach walk before Falcon was ready for bed.
My parents had seen the sunset there the night before when they had first arrived, and they said that it was a beautiful place to watch the sun set, and that the beach also got very busy with local fishermen.
It was a lovely evening as we walked along the sandy beach and sure enough the beach was quite busy with Mexican families, men with fishing rods, some with throw lines, some with throw nets, and boys with practice throw lines.  Some people were fishing, but others appeared to be waiting, then suddenly people in a certain area would run to one area and all cast or throw in their lines or nets.
At first I didn’t see what they were seeing, but then I started to spot the localized fish action just out from shore.  As the sun lowered in the sky the horizon turned orange and the reflection on the calm water was quite beautiful.  After the sun had set we saw our first real explosion of fish activity, a large patch of water just out from shore exploded with jumping little fish that moved along the beach and also inwards into the shallows.  Chasing them, and porpoising right out of the water amongst them were Pacific Carvel Jack, or Toro, as I have learned that they are called here.  Pelicans and frigate birds appeared instantly and local fishermen were right there with them.
The fishermen with the nets were after the little fish for bait and the fishermen with the rods and hand lines were after the Carvel Jack.  It was quite the sight to see, and my parents got to witness it several more times over the time that they were there.
Falcon had a nice walk saying “Hola” to people, especially to the other kids that were playing on shore.  He made friends with a little girl, and her older brother who was practising with one of the practice hand lines that the children use.  Their father was one of the fishermen and he happily called Falcon and us over to show us two nice-sized Carvel Jack that he had caught.

  1. So nice that you and Falcon got to spend time with your mum and dad. To think you and Falcon have watched a fishing tradition that has probably been around for thousands of years is very exciting. 😊
