Bahai Chamela

December 22, 2024
Bahia Chamela is a very large bay with a beach that is more than 5 kms long.  At the north end is a small Mexican town called Perula that gets business from Mexican tourists.  We anchored off of this town and spent the next five days there.  Like most beaches on the west coast of Mexico, Chamela is open to the swells, but the town of Perula has an estuary that flows out and they have a pier beside it and a light that marks the entrance.
Local Panga boats tie up to docks up in the estuary, and they come and go through the entrance all day long.  They run tours out to Isla Cocinas, an island about 2 nautical miles south in the middle of the large bay.  After we were anchored we saw the many fishermen and then tour pangas pass us by.  All of them were very friendly and gave us big waves and smiles, especially when they spotted Falcon standing and waving from the cockpit.
The water temperature was noticeably warmer than that of Punta Mita where we had gone swimming the day before.  In Bahia Chamela it was 28 degrees, which was a near perfect temperature.  We all spent a long time in the water that day, just enjoying the wonderful temperature.

We decided to try Falcon swimming in his lifejacket again and he did amazing.  Last time that we had tried it he didn’t quite have the body strength or coordination to keep himself on his front, or to be able to control his roll and get himself back onto his front when he did roll to his back.  The lifejacket is designed to flip him onto his back for safety, but he is now strong enough and coordinated enough to keep himself on his front.  He had a great time swimming around independently and did very well at figuring out how to roll himself.  It was nice for us all to be able to swim off of the swim grid together without one of us having to be supporting Falcon at all times.

This anchorage of Chamela is where we had chosen to be for the forecasted swells of up to three meters and we had timed our arrival just in time.  The swells increased noticeably throughout the day after we were anchored and the waves crashing onto the beach got bigger and bigger.

  1. Your boy is getting big. Soon he will be out of his life jacket and diving down into the water to get his mum a pearl.😊 Here the snow has finally gone but I heard there is cold weather to come in March. Enjoy the heat.❤️
