The Winds of Agua Verde
November 17, 2024
Our next anchorage further south was Agua
Verde. We had stopped here on our way
North in the spring of 2023, but we had only stayed the night, and had not had a chance to
explore. This time we were here for some
westerly winds, and although they were not overly strong because of the lay of
the land there were some very strong gusts that whipped around from multiple
directions creating some interesting dynamics.
During this, we decided to kayak to the next beach over from the bay that
we were anchored in, to where there was a small fishing community with a small
store and a couple of beach restaurants.
Although it was not dangerous in any way, it was a lot of work getting
back home, and in retrospect not worth the trip. On our paddle over to the village the wind
was behind us getting us easily out of our bay, but then it was also funnelling
out of the next bay so that we had to fight the gusts to get into shore there.
Once we were on the beach we felt the full
force of the wind coming out of the valley, and after we had our kayaks up on
shore we actually had one of them get blown up and flipped over. We tied them off well and weighted them down
with rocks before we left to go and explore.
We had to carry Falcon even though we were on a lovely beach because the
sand was being blown so hard along the ground and right at his level. Up from the beach we explored the small
fishing community and went to the small store to get a few items.
By the time we came back out onto the beach
the wind had calmed off, and instead of taking our opportunity for a peaceful
paddle home we decided that it was a lovely time to have lunch at one of the
small taco restaurants on the beach. The
fresh fish tacos were delicious, and it was a beautiful spot. The owners of the restaurant had several
friendly dogs that Falcon got to pet.
Unfortunately, instead of leaving while the wind was still calm once we
were done eating we stayed and talked to one of the owners. He and his sisters ran the place with their
Mom. Suddenly, a huge gust of wind came
out of nowhere. Sand came flying at our
peaceful table, and as we sheltered Falcon the owner grabbed everything light
off of our table. The wind had
returned. We hurried back to our kayaks,
timed our launch in between gusts, and although we had had to fight the wind
coming into the bay, the wind had now switched after the calm and we had to
fight against it all the way home.
Jason
and I have used our kayaks in a lot of different weather conditions, but this
was definitely the strongest wind that we had ever kayaked against. Many of the gusts were so strong that it was
all we could do to hold our ground, and sometimes we were even being pushed
backwards, only just able to hold the nose of the kayak into the wind. Again, we never felt that it was dangerous,
as we could have easily returned to the beach, but slowly, in between gusts, we
made progress, and eventually we made it back home.
I guess you can't always have calm winds. Glad you made it safely back to the Red Witch. Your lunch look delicious.
