Onward to Julian Cove

August 27-28, 2022

On Saturday, August 27th, with the forecast of strong southerly winds to be starting on Sunday, we headed out of Sea Otter Cove and out into the 2-3m swells.  The forecast on the VHF radio was for 10-20 knots of North West wind so we were looking forward to a good sail.  Sadly, the winds did not materialize and we ended up simply motoring our way over rolling swells down and into Quatsino Sound, where we came to anchor in beautiful Julian Cove.

Despite the strong southerly winds on the outer coast, it was glassy calm and peaceful in our anchorage.  We enjoyed watching a sea otter swim around our anchorage, continually diving down for food and coming up with either a crab or a clam.
We watched as it leaned back and cracked open the clam with a rock that was on its stomach, and as it chewed away at a squirming, pinching crab.
In the afternoon we saw a doe and two fawns out in the grassy area at the head of the cove; the anchorage was a beautiful spot.

The following morning we took a trip in Kiki through the narrows and over to Coal Harbour.  We bought two jerry cans of diesel and then went to look around in the museum.  It was a collection of stuff that one of the locals called his "junk"; he had collected it all and put it together for display.  The collection was varied, but also thorough, and it included a jawbone from a blue whale,

a massive collection of old chainsaws, old diesel engines, old floatplane engines from the Second World War,

and a cordless, gas-powdered, portable drill.

It was a very neat museum to look through!

Coal Harbour was a base for floatplanes patrolling the coast during WW2, watching for submarine activity off the coast of BC.
