A Summer-Like Day at Rattenbury

May 21, 2022

This year our spring in Ocean Falls, like that of much of BC, was long and cold.  On the 17th of May we awoke to four degrees and rain, with the snowline distinctly showing well down the mountains.  This was nothing unusual for us, but we were in for a few truly spring and almost summer-like days.  With sunshine and warm temperatures forecasted for the weekend, we were excited.  It was early enough in the spring that the bugs had not come out yet and so we would be able to relax and enjoy the warmth.

On May 21st, on what was forecasted to be the nicest of the nice-weather days, Jason and I packed up our bags and headed out in Little Red for a day of enjoying the sun.  We started the day with a bit of fishing, but quickly decided to head in to a beautiful beach that is on a little island near Rattenbury Point.
The weather was gorgeous and it felt like summer.
We spent the day exploring the shoreline and lying in the sunshine, and when we got hungry we got a small beach fire going and cooked up some sausages.
In the mid-afternoon, when the sun was at its hottest, Jason even braved the icy cold of the ocean water and went for a swim.
The winds remained calm all day, and when they did begin to pick up in the evening, flowing out of the inlets, our little island protected us and we stayed warm, relishing the heat.  As the sun got lower we headed home, happy to have felt the sun on our bodies.
Unfortunately those few days of warmth and sunshine were not the beginning of a beautiful summer for us.  Several days later the temperatures had cooled back down, but we were lucky that instead of morning temperatures of four degrees we warmed up to mornings of nine or ten; it felt warm in comparison.

  2. I think the spring and early summer were pretty cold and wet for all of BC. I'm glad you found a nook of warm to play in.
