A Bat on the Lake
July 30, 2021
One warm summer’s morning, as we were planing along in Kiki across the glassy, calm water of Link Lake, Jason suddenly altered course and said that he had seen a bat hit the water. All I could see were leaves floating on the still surface, but Jason had seen the impact so he new the area to head towards. As we got closer we spotted a bat using its wings to swim through the water, but it was quite far from land. We slowed down and I grabbed our fishing net. As we got close I reached out and scooped the poor little fellow up out of the water.
I laid the net down across Kiki’s seat and the bat walked its way to the edge of the net where it settled down and looked around. We looked at it from both sides. It was very neat to have such a close encounter with a bat; they are such amazing animals. Its cute little, squished-looking face with its large, pointy ears peered around at us. After a few minutes of sitting out in the sun the bat took a little hop and flew away. As it flew it looked like it was struggling, as it did not gain much altitude and did not fly a very nice course, but it headed for shore. As soon as it reached the rocky shoreline it landed on the rocks and climbed its way up into the foliage. For some reason the bat did not seem to be doing very well, but at least it made it to shore, hopefully it was able to rest and be all right in the evening. As we were on our way home in the evening from being on the lake, we spotted a nook in the side of the steep rock cliffs of the shoreline. The sun was at a perfect angle to be shining right into the nook, and at the end of it was a beautiful waterfall with a pool at the bottom. It was a hot evening cruising home, so we stopped in and went for a shower under the cool runoff water. It was beautiful; the sun made a rainbow in the spray and the flavour of the water was unbelievable. Definitely the best tasting water I have ever had! We stopped here on subsequent days and every evening the sun shone in perfectly for our rainbow shower and drink.
Wow - nice waterfall and nook. so protected. Poor little bat - hope he was okay.
ReplyDeleteLoved reading about the bat. What a surprise to see the little guy so far away from his habitat; lucky for him you were nearby to save him. Ah, that waterfall looks heavenly!
