Changes at Work
April 27th – May 18th
During our final two-week shift a lot changed at work. Some people got moved around, and we lost one of our experienced people. Because of this, our manager had to juggle the work schedule around because he needed some experienced people on the other shift. Jason and I were on day 11 of our last two-week shift. We only had four more days before we were supposed to get two weeks off before going back onto an eight-and-six schedule. Unfortunately, because of the staffing changes all of this had to change, and it meant that Jason and I only got three days off after finishing our 11th day, and then we were back on shift for another eight days. It worked out that we worked 19 days, 190 hours in 22 days.
Now that we are no longer on our former supervisor’s (Dave) shift we are the most experienced people on our shift. Jason managed a crew of people in Vancouver for enough years that he knew that he did not want to do it again, so the shift supervisor position fell on me. On our first eight-day shift in this role we had two new people to teach and direct, and also lots of jobs to get done. The two new people have now been shifted around so that Jason and I will have one new person on our shift, and Dave will have the other one on his shift.
The one positive to the changes that happened is that Jason and I are getting an opportunity to learn a lot more about the facility. During our shift in April I got to spend the whole shift learning from our site-maintenance guy. He had been the maintenance guy on site for the full 20 years of its operation and he knew the site inside and out. Unfortunately for us, he decided that it was time to quit camp work in order to spend more time with is family, so he retired from the company, and in that very full two weeks I got the chance to learn a lot about our ozone generation, the UV system maintenance, and oxygen generation. Since then, since our maintenance person is now gone and we are also short-staffed, Jason and I have gotten to be involved in a lot of the bigger projects than we might otherwise have. Jason has gotten to learn how to plastic weld and has repaired a crack in one of our two-foot PVC pipes. He is also learning how to do regular welding, and we are both enjoying these new opportunities.
Wow, big changes but some opportunities as well. Hope the new eight and six schedule works for you.
