Halibut and Prawns

April 13th – 26th

We had some great prawning and fishing during our time off.  About every three days we went out to pull up our prawn traps, and we did quite well each time.

The most that we got in one haul, between the four traps, was 164 prawns.  Pretty awesome!!

We also had good luck with Halibut.  One time we went out Halibut fishing before pulling up our prawn traps.  It was a beautiful calm day and we intentionally went out to fish during the tide change.  It was a large ebb tide changing to a large flood, and we fished from about one half hour before the slack and then after the turn of the tide.  We have found this to be the best time to fish for Halibut, and we were not disappointed this time.  First Jason caught one, it was a nice one and we were quite happy.

Soon after, I had one too and this one was a big one.  It pulled and pulled out the line, and then slowly I reeled it in.  I had to use both hands to pull up on the rod, and then I reeled in quickly with my left hand as I lowered the rod before using both hands to pull the rod up again.  When I got the halibut up to the point at which it would be able to see light from the surface it took off straight back down again, and I started all over.  The second time that I had it up near the surface we finally got to see it before it took off again.  This time it did not go as far; it was getting tired.  Once again I pulled it slowly up, and then it rocketed out along the surface of the water before pulling back down, but once again it did not go as far.  By the next time, it was tired and finally we were able to get it into the boat.  It was a beautiful fish, 43” long, 36lbs, and fat.  Woo-Hoo!!!

That day, as we headed in, glowing from ear to ear with happiness, we pulled up our prawn traps and we had 150 prawns.  Not bad at all!!
We also had a Squat lobster with the longest arms of any Squat lobster that we had ever seen.  He was super cool looking.
When we filleted our Halibut back at the dock the meat on the big guy was amazingly thick and beautiful.

What a great fish!

We also pulled up our crab traps that day, and we had three nice-sized males.

On April 21st it was Jason’s Birthday.  We put our kayaks in the truck and headed out to the second of the twin lakes.  We kayaked all of the way around the lake and Jason trolled for most of the time; he got one bite, but no fish.  It was still a bit cold and the water was quite high.  We saw many sandy areas that were underwater, but at lower water there will be lots of sandy beach areas.  Although we had packed a picnic we ended up going home after our paddle since it was one of the cooler days of our time off.  Jason opened his presents on the front lawn, and we cooked his birthday steaks over a fire in our fire pit.  We had steaks, prawns, and asparagus for dinner, and I had made him a German chocolate cake for dessert.  It was a very nice day!

  1. Now those are the kind of fishing experiences that we love to read about. Sounds like a great haul. Happy Birthday (belated) to Jason.
