Two Work Shifts
January 19th (Tuesday)
The shift that we had just started was the shift that would take us until after Christmas. We decided to do “our Christmas” after our shift, so we ended up doing it on December 31st, and it was a lovely way to spend New Year’s Eve.
January, and the new year, started with strong winds and heavy rain. On the January 1st we got 55.8mm of rain, and on the second we got 55.2mm. It was a wet start to the month, and with storms back-to-back, only occasionally broken up by the occasional gale, we had rain every day in January until the 20th. By the 20th we had gotten 379mm of rain. We also had a lot of hail in January, and one time that it hailed, but only for about 30 seconds, it hailed so hard that everything turned instantly white in a thick layer of ice pellets.
It has been quite an unusual month with so many thunderstorms and so much hail. People who have lived here for many years say that they have never seen so many thunderstorms.
On January 19th it was the last day of our first two-week shift for this year. We have once again switched back onto two-week shifts; back to the way it was when Jason and I first started last April. On the 19th when we first got up at 05:45 our rain gauge for the day read zero, and it started to rain around 06:00. We headed to work in the pouring rain, and the wind started to pick up until it was howling past the hatchery. The storm was short-lived and by 10:00 the rain and wind had stopped. The sky cleared, and when the plane got in around 13:00 and we got to come home because of the no-contact crew changes, it was sunny. Our rain gauge read 33.5mm of rain; 33.5mm in four hours.
We opened our blinds, cleaned the windows, vacuumed, and then settled down on our couch by the front window in the sunshine. It was the first time in 15 days that we had been home in the daylight, and it had been much longer than that since we had gotten to enjoy the sun. It was amazing!
Those are some big hail stones! We're enjoying the return of the posts, hope you guys are keeping warm up there this week it's supposed to get very cold
ReplyDeleteWe just had a lovey hail storm this afternoon. Everything is white now and on Feb 8th to boot. I've not known it to snow past the 1st of February before so this is our first snow of the winter. Sunshine is always a blessing. Hope you get a bunch of it.
