It Snowed!

January 24th (Sunday)

On Sunday we got snow!!  There had been a snowfall warning issued, and although many areas with the warning did not get snow, we got lucky and got it.  The snow started at around 18:00 on Saturday and it kept on snowing.

Each time we were up through the night we would look out and have a smile on our faces when we saw that it was still snowing.

It stopped at around 03:00, and we had gotten about 8 inches.

We were out early in the morning to play.  We built two snowmen, and Jason shovelled snow and cleared the snow bank left by the snowplough from around our truck and those of our neighbours.  We also had a brush on a pole that we used to clear the snow off of our truck and also from our neighbours' trucks.

We went to the boat to clear the snow from our enclosure, and enjoyed the quiet stillness of everything in its blanket of white.  Walking down to the boat in the snow brought back a lot of memories from last year around this time when we were living aboard the boat and getting snow as well.

We got to see a beautiful guillemot in its winter plumage close to our boat and we heard its companions in the distance.

It was a beautiful day!!

We took advantage of the nice weather to remove the starter motor from the little red boat that we had used over the summer.  It had never worked, and we had always used the emergency start cord to get it going.  We were hopeful that if we took it apart we might be able to figure out why it wasn’t working, and then fix it.  The solenoid was working, but the motor was not turning over.  We took it all apart at home and we found a lot of corrosion.  The springs on the brushes that are supposed to apply a constant and uniform amount of pressure onto the copper were seized and the brushes were not being pressed inward at all, in fact, they were quite stuck.  Lots of elbow grease, some wire brushing, corrosion shield spray, and some gentle tapping later, and we had all four brushes freed up and cleaned up.  We had all of the other parts cleaned up as well, and we put it back together.  When we put it back on the engine and turned the key we were quite happy that it worked!
