A Scenic Flight Back to Ocean Falls
December 22nd (Tuesday)
When the pilot escorted us out to the plane at the Port Hardy airport, I asked him if he would be willing to give us a fly-by of Baldy Mountain. I explained to the pilot that Jason and I don’t get to fly in and out very often, and that we had hiked to the top of Baldy in the summer and would love to see it from the air. The pilot drew out a map to clarify which mountain was Baldy, and said, “No problem”.
It was a beautiful day for our flight, the mountains were snow capped, the air was clear and calm, and we flew only about 1000 feet above most of the mountain tops; a few of them were a lot closer as we made our way slightly inland up along the coast.
We got to see many of the areas where Jason and I had anchored on our trip up the coast last year, and we kept pointing out areas to each other. Nakwakto Rapids (slightly right of center in the above picture) was one such place, where we had anchored in Allison Harbour and then taken Kiki to go and see the rapids.
The pilot brought us in towards Ocean Falls on a perfect scenic route, and as we gradually lost elevation we flew right past Baldy Mountain.
Jason and I could see exactly where we had stood, and we could even make out the snow-covered bump of the rock cairn at the top. Once past Baldy Mountain we took in the views down Link Lake before the pilot banked hard to the right and turned us around right over Baldy.
We did a spectacular fly-by over Ocean Falls, past Caro Marion, past Martin Valley, and then banked to the left and flew straight out the right-hand side of Cousins Inlet as we lost our elevation.
Over top of Wallace Bay the pilot again banked hard and turned us 360 degrees around.
We came in back towards Martin Valley on a perfect approach and made a perfect landing on glassy calm water in front of the airplane ramp. It was spectacular!
As we were all-smiles thanking the pilot, he looked back at us with a big grin on his face and said, “No problem, any excuse to fly more”. What a way to get to work, and for us to get home!
After a quick stop off at home, we headed straight to work to complete the first day of our next shift.

Wow, great photos of your trip back home. It is always a pleasure to see things from a different perspective.
