A Second Perfect Beach Day
July 1st (Wednesday)
This morning it was still windy, it was not a strong wind, but it looked and sounded from the forecast like the day would probably be similar to yesterday. We decided to take Kiki around to the beach for another beach day so that we did not have to paddle our kayaks against the wind again. Since we knew that the tide would be ebbing, we planned to simply let Kiki beach for the day. Why shouldn’t she get to dry out and enjoy the sun and the sand like we did?
We packed another picnic and headed out, excited for another day at the beach. The morning clouds cleared earlier than they did yesterday and we were hopeful that it might feel warm enough to go swimming. The water was so inviting, sparkling turquoise green in the long extending shallows. Although it was sunny, the breeze kept the air cool and I kept my long sleeved shirt on as we did cartwheels on the sand.
When we got hungry we got another fire going and had some fire-cooked pork chops for lunch. It is definitely our favourite way to cook; over a fire almost everything tastes better. The pork chops were juicy and delicious.
In the afternoon, although it was not motivatingly warm, we decided to go for a swim anyway. We ran our way down the beach and jumped in. It was chilly, but lovely, and we had the fire to come back up to to warm up.
Eventually, when we were getting ready to head home, we had to move Kiki about 200 feet down the beach towards the water.
We both picked up a side at the back and pulled her along, it worked quite well. We were quite happy that we had taken Kiki instead of our kayaks because the wind was once again whistling through the passageway just out from the beach.
On our way home we startled a mink that was fishing in the Back Door passageway. We stopped in the cove where we had found our trail across the island yesterday and picked some sea asparagus.
We had spotted it yesterday and were happy to be able to stop and easily pick a large Ziploc bag full. I was very happy that we had managed to find a nice patch of it as I had been hoping that we would find some out in this area. It is delicious.
Our second perfect beach day, we were happy.
