Weather Forecasts and Fitted Sheets
June 5th and 6th (Friday and Saturday)
The weather over the past two weeks has been very cloudy, with a lot of showers and a few days of rain. On Saturday it was back to raining quite hard and steady. The weather forecast had been back and forth all over the place. We often refresh the weather web site in the morning and see a forecast of sun for the next few days, and then by afternoon it’s calling for a mix of sun and cloud, and by the evening they may be calling for clouds and a chance of showers, and then by the next morning it may be back to mixed sun and cloud, or a chance of rain. It has been changing so regularly that we keep being disappointed. We had really been hoping to get a break in the weather in order to have a chance to hike up Mt. Caro Marion again before going back to work, but right now that isn’t looking likely, but then again they still have time to change it back to being nice.
It has definitely been a good chunk of weather for working on sewing, and I spent a bunch of time working on making us a fitted sheet. Up until this point we have always used large top sheets as our bottom sheet and simply tucked in the excess at the foot of the bed. I had wanted to try turning one of them into a fitted sheet, and now that I had the use of a sewing machine it was the perfect opportunity. Everything that one might do in a regular-sized house is doable on a boat, but certain things can definitely take a little more figuring and sometimes more time or frustration.
In a normal house I would have been able to lay the mattress either in the middle of a room or on a table and work easily around it, but in our boat it’s not quite so simple. I thought about taking the mattress pieces back up to the shack and working in there, but since it was raining we didn’t want to carry them up, and it is a much nicer environment to work at home. So instead, I had to figure out the best way to fit the sheet, and pin and mark it, without being able to kneel on the mattress, as that would of course disturb the sheet’s placement. It ended up working great and when I got the first sheet done, it fit perfectly, and because the first one had been a success, I started working on the next two. It would be nice to have all three of our sheets be fitted.
Nothing better than a nicely fitted sheet.
