Sewing Mattress Covers

June 2nd and 3rd (Tuesday and Wednesday)

On Tuesday morning we awoke to the sound of pouring rain.  We had had a lot of cloud and showers over the last couple of weeks, but this was the first real day of hard and steady rain.  It was a lovely day to be inside.
When I checked my email, I had one from Gladys saying that she would be happy for me to borrow her sewing machine if that would make things easier.  When I expressed that that would be helpful, she took it upon herself to bring it to us through the rain.  I had said not to bother today, but she came anyway saying that it was a perfect day to be sewing.  Of course she was right, but I didn’t want her to have to make the trip.  It was very sweet and thoughtful of her.
Once I was all set up with the sewing machine on board I could really make progress.  It was so much easier when I could fit, pin, and sew, without having to try to do all of the marking and pinning in advance of sewing.  Because of how we chose to cut our foam, it meant that I needed to add some material to the covers.
It ended up working out perfectly for me to use the zippered side of the mattress cover that came with the mattress originally (in the pictures this is the white and blue fabric with the yellow zipper).
By the end of the day on Tuesday I had two of the three covers done and I was quite happy with how they had turned out.  By the end of the day on Wednesday I had the third one done.  Yay!

When we checked our crab trap on Tuesday it was very full and heavy, and the fish carcass had been devoured.  We had 12 large males and many females.  Since our legal limit is eight males between the two of us we kept the largest ones and let the rest go.  While I was sewing, Jason cooked up the crab and then spent several hours cleaning them all.  It was a lot of work, but in the end we put seven bags in the freezer.
On Wednesday the Shearwater barge, the Central Coaster, arrived into Ocean Falls, and we got our groceries.  It has become part of our every-two-week routine and we have become quite used to the whole process.

  1. Rainy day sewing - always a good pastime. And 7 bags of crab in the freezer is not too shabby.
