Belated Birthday Cake

May 2nd – 4th, 2020 (Saturday – Monday)

This weekend it rained a lot and we spent the time mostly inside.  We took the time to do a bunch of cleaning and gave a good scrub to some of our walls.
I had ordered some things to make Jason a black forest cake for his birthday dessert, but the barge did not arrive that week with the whipping cream until after his birthday.  Since we missed his day for the main dessert we saved it until this rainy weekend, so I made him a belated birthday black forest cake on Sunday.
When we left Vancouver, we also left behind with my parents in Victoria our two round cake pans.  We had one round pie pan, but only one.  I decided to use our glass 9” x 9” square pan as well, but I also did not have any parchment paper.  Although I was a little worried about being able to get the cakes out of the pans in one piece, I went ahead and gave it a shot.  I greased the pans well and then after they were cooked and fully cooled I carefully went around with a small flexible spatula.  Both cakes came out perfectly and I was able to cut and layer them with no problem.  The cake looked a little odd since the bottom half was square, but overall I think it turned out well, and it tasted delicious.
Monday morning dawned a beautiful day.  It is interesting to note that just a few days ago we passed Victoria in total daylight hours.  Even still, the sun in Victoria rises seven minutes before it does here, but ours now sets 30 minutes later than in Victoria.
We put our carburetor back together after blowing out all of the passageways with compressed air, and we got it all put back together on the outboard.  Gladys and James came by to talk to us about their roof as we had offered to give them a hand in trying to fix it.  It has been leaking, so we would like to help them fix the problem.  Once they had left we packed up and headed out fishing.  Our outboard still had a hard time starting, but once it was warmed up it ran great.  The high rpm running issue seems to be almost, if not completely, all better.  Yay!
We only fished for about three hours; it was a beautiful afternoon out on the water, but we didn’t catch anything.  When we pulled up our prawn traps we had twice as many as last time, but unfortunately that was still only two.  Everyone who is prawning here this year, which is only a few people, are finding it very hit-and-miss.  Sometimes we get 20, the next time none.  People tell us stories of past years at this time of the year when they would be consistently pulling up close to 100 prawns every few days, no one seems to know what is different this year.  Maybe the prawns are practicing social distancing and are in self-isolation.
