Crabmeat for the Freezer

April 10th (Friday)

Last night the Shearwater barge arrived at our dock to tie up for the night.  In the morning at around 07:00 they fired up their engines and headed over to the unloading area.  Because we were getting some propane from them, I headed up the dock and Gladys picked me up on her way by.  While our propane tank was being filled we loaded up her truck with all of the Save-On-Foods grocery items, and most excitingly for us, two boxes from Shearwater.  Our mail at last!!
We had ended up coming to an agreement regarding our mail and we paid $45 for the two boxes of items.  It worked out to be the cheapest option that we had under the circumstances, and it really was our only option if we wanted our items.  Now Jason has some rubber boots that don’t have holes in them, and we have our water-maker filters, as well as many other items that we had been wanting and waiting for.
While I had been out dealing with our Propane and food delivery, Jason was hard at work on our boat.  He made water, did a bunch of cleaning, and dealt with our crab trap.  When he pulled it up it had about 20 crabs in it and he kept two large males and re-set it.  Later in the day when he checked it again it was so full that he brought it back to the dock to show me.
There were about 27 Dungeness crabs in it, and we kept 6 large males.  We also released several other large males that we could tell had just molted.  We are getting a bit better at identifying them while they are alive.  Eight crabs in one day is a record for us, and it was a lot of cleaning.  In the end we froze 6 good-sized bags of crabmeat and we still had some left to put in the fridge.
It was nice to get these bags into the freezer before we start work for our 14-day shift so that we had crab to thaw and enjoy if we wanted it.
In the afternoon I also made another batch of my grandmother’s (Mormor’s) white bread so that we would be ready for lunches for work.
