Change of Plans
March 31st (Tuesday)
After hearing the wind all night we awoke to strong outflow winds. We had been planning to leave the dock at around 07:00, but instead we walked over to the municipal building to check the weather on the internet.
There were outflow winds at Cathedral Point in Burke Channel of around 90 km/hr, and the forecast was for such to continue for at least the day and probably into tomorrow. The wind speed, combined with a wind chill of -10 at Cathedral Point was not motivating. Also, knowing how nasty channel conditions can get with a steady wind we decided to stay at the dock. If we had not had to go out into Dean Channel we probably would have left anyway, but we were not too keen on going out into a nasty chop in such cold conditions with the probability of freezing spray.
As we were heating water for our morning tea and coffee our propane tank ran out. I went outside onto our back deck to switch tanks and the wind immediately whisked away all the warmth from my fingers. With a shudder from the chill it was nice to come inside into the constant heat from our electric heaters. Didn’t I say before that spring was here, well apparently it was still winter.
In the afternoon Ken, the wharfinger, came down to see us. Unfortunately he had some bad news for us. He said that the dock master was thinking about closing the dock, and since we were already here we would be free to stay, but if we left for more than a night or so, we would not be allowed back. We would be allowed to do an overnight trip to Shearwater to get our mail and supplies, but that was it. They were trying to prevent people from coming in from outside of Ocean Falls with the risk of bringing in the virus.
This news was very disappointing for us. We understood why they would choose to close the dock, but to prevent us from going out and anchoring further away from anyone than we currently were didn’t seem to make sense. Ken said that nothing was for sure yet, and that he would let us know as soon as he knew what was happening.
Yikes - I get why they are concerned but that kind of puts a kibosh on your plans and upcoming work. Gheeesh! Darn Virus!
