Boat Projects and Kiki
February 17th (Monday)
We had quite nice weather, with a high cloud that broke up through the day, and we even got some sunny periods. It is amazing how high the sun is in the sky now compared to a month ago. Spring is on its way!
Because of the lovely weather, we worked on outside projects. We installed some more snaps along certain areas of our enclosure to make it more rainproof in the wind. We raised our main sail, checked connections and cotter pins, and greased grease nipples. We changed out the line for our topping lift, and worked on the installation of our jiffy-reef line for our third reef point on our boom.
Since our boom is round, and the block that we needed to mount was flat, we had to make an adaptor piece. We used a piece of StarBoard, and used a flap sanding-disc on our grinder to round out one side into the shape of our boom. That way when we mount the block it will have a flat solid surface to mount to, which will, in turn, fit the curve of the boom. These projects, along with some other little odds and ends kept us busy.
When we went to check on Kiki, she had lost air, again from the bow section. We were hopeful, however, that it might simply have been because of the drop in temperature, as we had turned off the heater in “The Shack” over night. We sprayed around the patch area, and since there was no sign of a leak, we went ahead and put her in the water.
Unfortunately, once she was in the water we could hear a leak, and it was easy to spot where it was with the bubbles coming up. This leak was just in the middle of the underside of the pontoon, and from the sound of it, it was big enough that we definitely would have found it when we were searching for leaks before. How it simply appeared while sitting in “The Shack” was a mystery, but it sure felt like we were constantly chasing leaks, and we worried, since these last two leaks had no explainable causes.
I will be sending this out in the mail tomorrow to my parents. Sorry that I have been taking so few pictures for you. I assure you that that will change when we start heading north once again.
Sorry to hear about your new leak. They are troublesome for sure.
