Fishing off of the Dock at Ocean Falls

February 5th and 6th (Wednesday and Thursday)

Wednesday was a highly unmotivating day outside, so we remained indoors as much as possible. The mountains were socked in, it poured rain, and it was cold. We did as much Spanish lesson time as our brains could handle, and then busied ourselves with reading, writing, and inside projects, and I made a chocolate cake to take over to Ken’s house as dessert for dinner.
At 16:30 Ken picked us up, and we went to his place for dinner. He had made meatballs and gravy with potatoes and carrots for dinner; it was delicious. We had a lovely visit with lots of stories and two games of crib. It was a nice evening.
On Thursday it was still pouring rain, although it did lessen up as the day progressed. After our Spanish time and workout time, Jason went to try some fishing off of the dock. We had heard that in years past, of course not at this time of the year, people had had luck fishing off of the dock, so he thought it was worth a bit more time trying. He felt a nibble, and when he pulled on the line it felt heavier, so he reeled it up, but just before he could see the hook, whatever it was got off.  The bait had clearly been munched on, so he let it down again. This time he once again felt the nibble pull on the line, and he had something. He reeled in his line, and this time he got to see what the culprit was. It was a Dungeness crab, which had been hanging on for 80plus feet as Jason reeled in the line, and it was hanging onto the bait with all of its might. As the surface got closer, however, it let go and drifted back down to the bottom. It made us wonder about how many times that we had felt nibbles, or just pulled up our line to check and the bait was gone, whether it was perhaps a crab and not a fish.
While Jason was trying to catch us dinner I worked on fixing our seat bag for our tender, in which we put things like binoculars, camera, water bottles, etc. It had started to tear a while ago, and I wanted to fix it before it got too bad. It was a bit of a tricky repair because the material was fraying badly, and there was little substance left to sew onto, but I was able to graft (sew) a new piece of fabric to the old one, up where there was still strength, and to use that for the patch. I think it turned out well.
