A Long Day of Fishing
February 2nd (Sunday)
After our Spanish lesson in the morning, we decided to go out fishing. It was hard to tell how much wind might be coming up the inlet, as we were in the calm around the corner in Ocean Falls. At least we figured it would be calm enough to pull up our prawn traps, if not to fish.
It was a crisp and beautiful morning, we had gotten about two inches of snow overnight, and the mountains were white and glistening.
Out from Wallace Bay, in Cousins Inlet, it was still quite choppy, but the wind was light. We were able to fish with one person fishing and the other person keeping the bow into the waves. As the day progressed the wind calmed off even more, and the chop gradually dissipated. It turned out to be a perfect weather day for fishing. The sun came out on and off, the wind was calm, and the sea almost turned glassy.
Unfortunately it was not a perfect day for fishing in terms of the fish. We only caught very small fish all day, but since the weather was so perfect we stuck with it and kept trying. We tried a wide range of areas and techniques, and still had no luck. As soon as the wind had died off we both started fishing, one of us using bait, and the other jigging, but still we got nothing.
When we finally had to head back in, because we had to pull up our traps before dark, we were cold and tired of fishing. We were hopeful that we would at least have some prawns in our traps, but unfortunately we only had three prawns in one trap and none in the other. We reset one of the traps, but packed the other one up, it seemed to be a waist of bait to put it out again. In our crab trap, we had three large Dungeness, but they were all females, two of which had large egg sacks.
We have had no problems catching Dungeness crab here in Cousins Inlet, but there seems to be a serious lack of large males.

Looking back toward Martin River.

We came home after a cold, but beautiful six hours on the water with only three prawns.
Unfortunately our efforts to gather food here have not been very successful, and we are gradually getting down to the bottom of our freezer. Despite the fact that we have been crabbing constantly, and fishing and prawning on every day that the weather would allow, we have been rewarded with very little food. We will probably have to make a trip to Bella Bella sometime soon to resupply.
Sounds like resupply is in order.
