Heading Back to Ocean Falls
January 10th (Friday)
Happy New Year Everyone! It is hard to believe that it is 2020 already.
Jason and I have had a great vacation on land. We have enjoyed good visits with family and friends, and have also been enjoying the luxuries of living ashore. We have enjoyed an unnecessary number of hot showers, especially at my parents where we can enjoy endless hot water in a shower stall that is very big compared to what we are used to aboard the Red Witch. Everyone we have visited has had a dishwasher, and when we have done dishes by hand, it has been a treat having running hot water. The wide-open indoor heated areas that most people take for granted have been spoiling us with so much room to roam around indoors.
We are starting our trip back home on Saturday (11th), assuming the weather allows it. In this last week, both of the two ferries that we need to take, and that need to connect with each other in order for us to get back to Ocean Falls, have been cancelled at different times, so hopefully no wind or snow storms come up for Saturday night. We will leave Victoria early on Saturday morning, as it is currently looking like there may be some snow on the roads. Hopefully all is clear and we make good time up to Port Hardy. Our first ferry, the Northern Expedition, leaves at 18:00 and gets us into Bella Bella at 01:00. We then wait and catch the smaller Nimpkish ferry at 02:45, and after one stop in Shearwater, we get into Ocean Falls at 06:20. It will still be pitch-black dark when we arrive in Ocean Falls, as the sun still does not rise there until 08:40.
We are taking as much stuff back with us as we can fit into my parents’ car, so we will have to make a few trips from the ferry terminal in Ocean Falls to our boat at the marina. Currently we have three large duffel bags packed, as well as the backpacks that we came down with. We plan to have two more, smaller duffel bags packed by the time we leave. We are loading up as much as we can on specific items that are very expensive to purchase on the Central Coast, and much cheaper in Victoria.
Once we are back in Ocean Falls we will have no cell service and no wifi. The marina where we are staying has wifi during the summer months, but they turn it off during the winter. Currently we are planning to stay in Ocean Falls at the marina for the rest of January and probably for February as well. It is such a luxury for us to have a few electric heaters going, and also to not have to worry about power and charging our batteries. Currently the forecast for when we get back is for lows between -14 and -22 and daytime highs of -8 to -14 (depending on if we look at the Bella Bella forecast or the Bella Coola forecast). Either way it will be cold. Both places are calling for snow as well, which will be fun!
We are looking forward to doing some hiking and exploring in the area of Ocean Falls, Link Lake, and Martin River, and we will send more blog updates when we have service next.
Enjoy your January
You too! Though it be cold, it is always a good feeling to come "home" - no matter where.
