Preparing to Leave Calvert

December 10th–12th (Tuesday – Thursday)

Our last three days at Calvert Island were nice and relaxing. We made a delicious goose pasta with the last of our frozen goose from Eucott Bay. It was too bad that we did not find another good spot for hunting them after leaving Eucott, as they were a delicious change to our regular seafood protein.
We went ashore in Kiki and are happy to say that our patch worked perfectly. Kiki was as firm as the day we filled her.

These last few days were much warmer. When it clouded over and the rain came, all of the ice in the bay melted quickly. In contrast to the below freezing temperatures we had been having, it almost felt like spring. Along with the rain came another day of strong winds. It was a fast moving system, so it was all over within 24 hours, but it came with 50-knot winds. Although only southerly winds were forecasted, we ended up getting east winds for the first few hours. East is the worst direction for wind in Pruth Bay as Kwakshua Channel is a wide, straight, open shot out to the east. It does not take much wind to build up a chop, and we were getting 40-knot gusts. Luckily, after a couple of hours, the wind slowly changed to the southeast, and then finally to the south, so that the waves died off and we had more protection from the wind. By late evening we were only getting 20-knot gusts, and no sustained winds, so we were able to sleep soundly.
On Thursday morning we were up early with the plan of being ready to leave Calvert Island at first light. The forecast had been for showers and we had seen the moon clearly when we were up through the night. Shorty after we were up, however, it started to pour. It was a mix of rain and slush, and it pelted down on the deck. Because of the clear sky through the night the temperature had dropped, and it was now a cold, wet morning. Optimistic that it was just a shower we waited for it to let up. The weather, however, did not improve until the afternoon, so we changed our plans and will leave Calvert on the 13th instead.
