Exploring Discovery Bay

October 16th and 17th (Wednesday and Thursday)
It was another rainy and windy couple of days. The rain, for the most part, was steady. We got a few breaks from time to time, but the next rain shower was never far away. We had a couple of rainbows, and the sun tried to break through, only to be covered over again by the next dark cloud. The wind was also ever present. The intensity came and went in gusts in the anchorage, and from what we heard from the VHF current-condition reports for lighthouse stations close by, we were quite well protected. The gusts still howled by, however, and the rain combined with the wind made it hard to go out and do anything.
Each time that the sky looked like it might be clearing we went out.

In one of the bays that we explored we saw a lot of male Surf Scoters. They were the first males we had seen. Inside our anchorage area it seems to be only females. The males are very pretty with distinctive black and white colours.

On Thursday, the rain stopped for a bit in the afternoon, and it even seemed that the wind had died off a bit too. We got ready to go out exploring, but of course the rain started again just as we were heading out. We went anyways, as we were fully suited in our rain armour. We explored northwards from the entrance to our anchorage, and went through the islands that almost block the passage through to Return Channel. It was a lovely area, with many little islets with trees covered in Old Man’s Beard, and there were patches of trees with bright red and orange leaves nestled amongst the green of the conifer trees along the shore. Unfortunately it was pouring rain, and the wind began to pick up again, so our exploration was not as thorough as it otherwise would have been, but it was still nice.
On Wednesday evening, Jason made us a delicious goose chilli for dinner.  It is amazing to me how similar the ground goose meat is to ground beef. If you had had some of the chilli you would likely have thought that it was made with ground beef. It was a delicious dinner with fresh biscuits.
