Some Hot Spring Troubles
September 30th (Monday)
The gusts of wind continued to lessen through the night, and eventually we were left in complete silence and stillness, it was wonderful!!
We awoke to a mix of sun and cloud, and calm. It was beautiful. The clouds appeared to be building, and we wondered if a system was moving in, but we were once again unable to get our weather fax, so we did not know. It seemed that the amount of cloud cover played a big role in whether or not we could get reception for the weather fax, and over the last few days, with our blue sky, we had been unable to connect to the station.
The air was also free of the smell of rotting salmon, which was nice. We looked forward to getting to the hot springs to relax. However, when we got there we were standing at the edge getting ready to get in when we suddenly realized that the pool was 3/4 empty! Where had all the water gone? There was still a good flow of water coming in, just as we had left it, and yet the pool was mostly empty. Upon further investigation we discovered the leak.
It appeared that there was a previous leak that had been fixed at some point in the past with a combination of plastic bags, rocks, and mud. The old repair of the leak was very low down at the bottom of the front wall, so we imagine that the very high tides, both yesterday and today, that would have been lapping at the repair, and even submerging it, probably loosened it and made it leak again. So, we opened the drain valve so as to drain it completely with the plan to attempt to repair it another day. Disappointed, we headed home without our soak. As we were leaving the hot springs to head home we saw the single bear again. He was again on the same shore as the hot springs, and making his way towards them. We puttered over toward him in our tender, and watched and took pictures of him plodding along the shore sniffing for salmon, and we watched as he ripped apart and ate the ones he found.
He was surprisingly unconcerned about us, and barely even looked up as we watched him.
