High Tides of September

September 29th (Sunday)
Well, the wind continued through the night, its intensity gradually increasing until we were back up to our repetitive 30 - 40 knot gusts by 05:30. Because it was lighter winds to start with, and also because we were more tired than the night before, we did manage to sleep. On and off we seemed to manage to catch broken two-hour chunks of sleep, so that was much better than the night before.
We were up early again listening to the gusts and watching them rip across the water, tossing up spray as they went. Some of the stronger gusts over the last few days have caught our boat and thrown her tight against the anchor chain, continuing to push on her they have heeled her over to a point that we have actually had some items fall off of our shelves.
We remained at home until the gusts lessened to around 25 knots, and then went to the hot springs. We did not want to inflate our kayaks in the wind, and it would also have been quite hard to paddle them in the gusts, so we took Kiki instead. Because of the large swing in tides there are many areas on shore that we cannot access for most of the day, especially with Kiki, so we could not go to work on our trail.
Instead we watched the birds soaring from the comfort of the hot tub. It has been quite amazing watching the number of birds soaring and enjoying the sunny wind over the last couple of days. There are so many eagles and gulls here, and they both seem to enjoy playing in the wind. It is fun to watch them catching the updrafts or just playing in the gusts.
We took our three interior-area carpets with us to the hot springs, and made use of the hot water in the bathtub to give them a scrub. After five months of not being cleaned we got a lot of dirt out of them, and they almost look brand new. They should dry quickly with the wind, and it will be nice to have them clean and fluffy under our feet again.
Although tomorrow is actually the highest tide of the month, today was the highest we have seen it, and we were in the hot spring for it. It was so amazingly high; there was about one foot of seawater lapping at the wall of the hot spring pool.  The flat rock that the bathtub sits on was surrounded by ocean, and Kiki was literally floating at our feet. It was quite impressive; I would not have guessed it would get that high.

High and Low Tides at the Hot Springs.

Back at home we had a delicious dinner of curried salmon, and fried rice on cabbage with almonds. It was funny though; both of us found that our appetite for salmon had decreased since being surrounded by the smell of rotting salmon. I think we will take a break from having salmon for a while.
The wind gradually decreased throughout the day, and after roughly 50 hours of blowing, it has finally stopped. We are finally getting some silent times where the water actually has a chance to calm right off. It is beautiful. Small and relatively short-lived gusts are still coming, but they seem to be coming less frequently, and we are hopeful that we may actually have a calm night. Fingers crossed again.
