Fancy Cove and Birthday Celebration

August 30th (Friday)
We pulled up our anchor from Pruth Bay on Calvert Island at around 07:15 and motored out of Meay Inlet, into Hakai Passage, and up Fisher Channel. We turned into Lama Passage, and came in to anchor in the beautiful anchorage of Fancy Cove.  It was a beautiful sunny morning, and we quickly transitioned from the crisp morning air to a warm summer feel.
The building of the Hakai Institute on pilings indicates just how low and high the tides get. There is a sign warning about tying up a tender under the building, as one's boat could get crushed as the tide rises.

I had prepared, and let sit, a triple batch of bread yesterday, so we cooked it in the tented bread pans, timed so that it was done just as we were finishing up with anchoring.  That bread recipe works really well in the bread pans with aluminum foil tented over the top for the first half hour of cooking time, instead of the cast iron pot with a lid on.  We enjoyed a lunch of fresh bread, cheese, and salmon egg caviar.

My mom and dad headed out kayaking, and Jason and I went out to set our traps.  We set the prawn trap in about 360’ and the crab trap in about 270’, so we shall see.

Since my parents were leaving the next day, and since they had brought presents with them for my birthday, we did an early birthday celebration for me in the evening.  I had made a chocolate cake and my mom iced it with both white and chocolate icing.

We had a delicious dinner of salmon, sea asparagus, carrots, and potatoes followed by presents and then cake.

It was a lovely last evening with my parents.
Tomorrow, Jason and I will take my parents in the tender to drop them off at the ferry terminal in Bella Bella, so that they can catch the ferry back to Port Hardy where they left their car.

(Sheya's mom writing: While it was pouring rain when Sheya and Jason took us to Bella Bella in the tender, by the time the ferry arrived it was clear and sunny, and we had a lovely trip back to Port Hardy.
As we were passing Fancy Cove on the ferry, and had just spotted the Red Witch anchored in the distance, Sheya and Jason surprised us by having radioed the ferry to have an announcement put on over the speaker system wishing us a pleasant journey. It was quite a surprise to hear our names announced and then to hear the relayed message received from the Red Witch.
On the way back down the coast, I spotted a very strange sight, and when I zoomed in with the camera I discovered that a larger boat was pulling a bunch of smaller boats, presumably from one of the fishing lodges that was closing down for the season.

As we passed Calvert Island, the memories of our time exploring the island flooded back in, as it truly was a spectacular island. And, once again we enjoyed watching the sunset, this time behind Calvert Island, and from a very different vantage point.
Passing the southern tip of Calvert Island.

Our time on the Central Coast with Sheya and Jason was full of many special moments. The scenery was spectacular, the food was amazing, and Sheya and Jason were wonderful guides and hosts. My thanks to Sheya and Jason, for showing us a part of their paradise, and giving us a fantastic experience! )
