Our Last Day at Codville Lagoon

July 22nd (Monday)
Today we had a nice day relaxing, doing chores, and working on projects. It was a beautiful sunny morning, and the clouds did not roll in until the afternoon. We did two loads of laundry, and as the wind picked up in the afternoon it helped it dry on our lifelines. I started another net project, and we mounted a stainless tube safety-bar in front of our stove.
When we pulled up our first crab trap, it was our round one, the carcass was totally picked clean, and there were six small Dungeness crabs. They got put back in the water, and they presumably had an amazing meal.
When we pulled up our square trap we actually had some edible crabs. We kept two large Rock crabs, and we let two go. We also had one Pacific Lyre Crab, which apparently can live in depths up to 2,100'.
It was an interesting day, as the wind was forecasted to be south becoming southeast up to 30 knots. We definitely got some wind that seemed to be as they had forecasted, but the weird thing was that the wind kept switching directions. It would be blowing from the south, we would be getting the odd gust and a chop with white caps would build up out in the more open sections of the lagoon, and then it would all die down and we would start getting some wind from the northwest with some stronger gusts. It changed back and forth like that a few times, as well as coming from some other directions in between. Curious.
We continue to hear and see our resident seal. He seems to have his established positions where he does his splashing, and he goes from spot to spot through the afternoon performing. Then in the later afternoon and evening he starts his noises that sound like grunting and snorting. We are guessing that this potentially has to do with marking a territory.

For dinner Jason made an amazing salmon fillet incrusted in herbs and spices, lemon pepper, dill and garlic, roasted in the oven with homemade tartar sauce on the side. We had it with an almond and cashew butter fried rice with water chestnuts, baby corn, and almonds. Yummy!!

Tomorrow (July 23rd) we are heading to Shearwater for fuel and fishing gear. We will then head out Raymond Passage to explore the anchorages on the outside of Campbell Island and Hunter Island, so we will be out of cell service for awhile again.
