First Days at Codville Lagoon

July 17th and 18th (Wednesday and Thursday)
It poured rain all night on the night of the 16th, and although we believed that the forecasted gale-force winds never materialized, in later talking to another boater it would appear that they did, and we were just very sheltered in our spot. They apparently had 20 plus knots where they were anchored in the main popular area of Codville Lagoon, and friends of theirs anchored elsewhere on the central coast got over 30 knots, so odds are it was the full forecasted 35 knots if you were not in a protected area. It got windy, but never too bad where we were, but it sure did rain. We woke up to pouring rain and enjoyed it from the comfort of our home.
In the afternoon we got suited up in our heavy-duty rain gear and went out to do some trolling. Of course we did not catch anything, but we did put in the hours of effort. We checked our crab trap when we came back in and were very disappointed to find it empty. We re-set it in a new location. Today (18th), however, when we checked it again we still had no edible crabs. We did have one small female rock crab, and also a very cool Brown Irish Lord Sculpin, although unfortunately too small to eat.
This time we have tried setting our crab trap in a whole new area, we set it in close to 300' of water, so we shall see if we have any better luck at depth. Today we also put in our time trolling for the elusive salmon. At least today was a more encouraging day, we saw salmon four different times, twice it was close to the boat and we even got two bites, but then they were gone. So after hours and hours of trolling we still have yet to catch a salmon.
I am very glad most of our fishing time is spent jigging and that it is much more productive, otherwise we would have gone hungry long ago. At this point, however, I think we are quite determined to hopefully, eventually, sometime catch a salmon. We are hopeful that as we get closer to mid August, and hopefully the numbers of salmon increase in the area, that we might have better luck.
We saw whale activity in the distance today, and also saw a very curious sea lion while coming back through the passage into Codville Lagoon.  He swam along parallel to us for a while, checking us out before diving under. They have such awesome expressions when they are curious, and when I have managed to catch them on camera it is always a very funny look.
This evening while sitting in our cockpit we were treated to a beautiful rainbow. As the sun was shining and a heavy rain shower passed over, the rainbow appeared low and vibrant stretching over the anchorage bay across from us.  Very beautiful!

Rainbow over the bay of anchored boats.

  1. Nice rainbow. Those salmon can be elusive at times. Take heart, you will catch some.
